Ukraine: a humanitarian emergency requiring coordination and professionalism

As a member of the Board of Directors of Forética, we thank Forética for the effort it is making to make visible the response of the NGOs that are responding to the humanitarian emergency and are members.

We believe it is essential not to send aid in kind from Spain. There are many arguments for raising funds here and channeling them directly to the humanitarian actors present in the territory. The first is to respond to needs that are detected in real time on the ground; the second is to strengthen local economies and capacities; the third is the most effective and efficient way to reduce costs; the last is to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint.

Ayuda en Acción is one of the eight members of the European Alliance 2015 network and, as such, is channeling all the solidarity it receives from citizens and the business sector to two organizations that have been present in the conflict zone since 2014. These are ACTED and PIN, People in Need, which have a presence in both eastern and western Ukraine, where humanitarian efforts are now concentrated, as well as in the bordering countries: Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Moldova. Specifically, at this stage we are focusing intervention on ensuring food security, water and sanitation, shelter, and psychosocial support to the most vulnerable people, both internally displaced persons and refugees arriving in neighboring countries. It is also essential to coordinate emergency response. In Leópolis we lead through PIN the coordination with more than 70 local social entities.

ActionAid joins Alliance 2015's call for humanitarian corridors to be opened to allow aid to arrive and civilians to be evacuated.

Finally, in order to support refugees arriving in Spain, Ayuda en Acción is coordinating with CEAR, the Spanish Committee for Refugee Aid.

In summary, we remind you how important it is to work in a professional and coordinated manner.
