Betting on disruptive technologies for a more sustainable world
By Luis Furnells, Executive President of Oesía Group
Artificial Intelligence is a critical technology for the development and prosperity of today's society, and applicable to all industries and all economic fields.
As CEO of a company dedicated to dual-use digital and industrial engineering, I am aware that AI is a strategic and essential tool for the progress of society, and that it contributes decisively to improve business processes and make companies more competitive in a digital environment in constant transformation.
In addition to the opportunities it offers, embracing AI requires a cultural change to optimize its value, as well as an exercise in responsibility to meet its challenges and challenges, while respecting the ethical and sustainability principles of our society.
Data-driven decision making, anticipation of future scenarios, cost reduction, energy efficiency or the ability to improve the sustainability of companies are some of its benefits. This makes Artificial Intelligence an unpostponable necessity for all types of organizations, and especially for SMEs and ITEs (Intermediate Size Companies) if they want to compete on equal terms with the rest of the companies.
The Spanish industry is in an excellent position to take advantage of the transforming potential offered by these emerging technologies. In the case of Grupo Oesía, the company that I am proud and honored to preside, the conviction prevails that to go further it is necessary to be accompanied. For this reason, I firmly defend the need to promote and encourage strategic alliances with other national and international companies, which will allow us to complement our technological capabilities, thus strengthening our presence in the world market. These alliances will also contribute to boosting European strategic autonomy without losing national sovereignty.
With regard to the ethical and sustainability challenges in the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, I am confident that European regulation will adequately balance the need for AI development and the associated benefits with ethical issues and the protection of citizens' rights, which are at the core of the values of European integration.
As an example of the protective umbrella provided by Europe, I would like to highlight the importance of AI in today's defense and security environment. In this regard, the balance between strategic advantage and management is decisive. In Western nations aligned with NATO, when it comes to confirming the actions to be taken in each case, a human factor is always considered as the ultimate decision point. Thus, the ultimate decision is always left to human ethics, balancing technological development with fundamental ethical considerations.
Therefore, those nations that are able to technologically lead the adoption of AI in our defense systems will have a fundamental strategic and operational advantage.
In conclusion, our commitment to responsible AI in the era of sustainability is clear and resolute. We will continue to invest in advanced disruptive technologies, applying them ethically and responsibly, and contributing to a better, more efficient, safer and sustainable world for all.
